about

Alphabet: One day Soup got sick and told me this line. I wanted to make a track really similar to something you would hear from Oneohtrix Point Never and so I moved to make it ambient but also thoughtful. Another big inspiration was a Sufjan Steven's track called "America." I wanted to put the listener into a meditative state. Constantly hearing "I don't feel pain anymore" is soothing but also a bit offputting at the same time. The guitar was provided by Stevie Delacruz of Blu-Side Studios. He is an insanely talented musician and was so wonderful and turned in the guitar incredibly fast. That aside this is easily the most challenging song I've ever produced and mixed. I'd never had this many issues balancing sounds before. This was one of the last songs we completed for that reason, I just kept going back and changing things, adding elements, taking other things out.

Soup: This song was very personal to us. We wanted to have a longer track that would be one of the centerpieces of the album. We struggled for a couple of weeks to come up with the repeating phrase we wanted to use for the track. We took inspiration from a Sufjan Stevens song that Alphabet had sent me that also had a repeating phrase throughout the track and instead the instrumental would change and evolve while the phrase continued to repeat, changing the context of the phrase. Alphabet had already made a beat that he knew would work for the track and I thought that it was great, but I wanted it to transition into a completely different sound for the second half of the track. For this section we knew we wanted a transitional element to open up the second half of the track, so we decided on guitar.
