Alphabet: Another Portishead-inspired song. I can't stay away from tracks like these, they're so poignant and evocative. I think we hit the nail on the head this time. This was challenging for me to sing because most of these past few months involved me screaming my head off. I really hated how a lot of the initial versions of this track came out. I was trying too hard to do a Beth Gibbons/Bjork impression when I should have been trying to carve my own path out. Eventually, I found it with the help of Soup. I actually recorded half of it live for him and he really seemed to like the direction we went in after that. This is the last song on the album and the last one we finished before we moved to rollout. This one is probably my favorite. I think it has the most mistakes but they're all one's I'm content living with.

Soup: This track was one of the first we thought of when we began working on the album. Originally inspired by Portishead’s “Seven Months”, we knew with our love for Portishead that it would be a continuous inspiration for our sound moving forward with the album. What the song ended up becoming was very sonically grand and cavernous. The sample in the background is from one of Alphabet’s friends who produces music and allowed us to use some of his samples for the project. The drums I had worked on myself took me about a week to finish before initially sending them to Alphabet for mixing. After we finished the first demo, we sat on the song for quite a while before actually coming back to finish it. Nothing was clicking at first when we tried the singing portions, and it seemed to drag on for too long. But towards the beginning of April, we finally came back to the track with some new ideas on what to do with it. I suggested Alphabet do 2 takes of the song with different vocal inflections and then mesh them on top of each other. The end result I think is much more sonically interesting and diverse than what we initially had planned for the track.
